"You who have seen this love’s payday of wild toiling and sweet agonizing, you know being born is important."

Carl Sandburg

Susan Lawler, LM CPM

The first birth Susan ever attended in a supportive role was in 1991 witnessing the birth of her niece. She found herself in awe and inspired by how important being born truly is. Soon after Susan found the book “Spiritual Midwifery” by Ina May Gaskin and read it alongside “A Child is Born” by Lennart Nilsson. She devoured them both and could not get enough!

I was called to be a midwife.

Susan embarked on her incredible journey in 1996, stepping into the world of supporting women during their childbearing years as a certified doula. Her passion led her to become a childbirth educator the following year. She had the honor of assisting over 2000 families as a Doula/Midwife Assistant. She also mentored numerous couples through childbirth classes, creating a lasting impact on their birthing experiences.

As a Doula, Susan attended births in hospitals, birth centers, and private homes gaining invaluable experience under various skilled providers including OB/GYN’s, Certified Nurse Midwives, and Licensed Midwives.

In 2003 Susan had the opportunity to Join The Birthing Inn in Tacoma, WA as a midwife assistant and childbirth educator, further enriching her knowledge and exposing her to a diverse range of practices.

Susan became immersed in the childbirth culture, assisting, teaching and co-managing The Birthing Inn. Her decade-long observation and learning phase as a Doula, Midwife Assistant, and Childbirth Educator culminated in Susan’s decision to pursue midwifery school in 2005. By the fall of 2008, she proudly became a licensed Midwife in Washington State, committed to serving her clients with the nurturing Midwifery Model of Care.

In 2013 Susan took ownership of The Birthing Inn. In addition to owner/operator/clinical director, Susan also mentored student doulas and midwives. In 2023 she sold the center and turned her attention back to midwifery, holistic pregnancy coaching, and consulting.

Now offering traveling midwifery care & WA state midwifery!

As life evolves, Susan has recently embraced a more nomadic lifestyle alongside her husband Chris, who recently retired.

Susan has seamlessly integrated her passion for midwifery with her newfound love for exploration, becoming a traveling midwife by pursuing licensing in Hawaii and Arizona along with her current WA licensing. Having the credential of a Certified Professional Midwife has allowed Susan to explore offering Midwifery in other states. This lifestyle not only allows her to spend quality time with her loved ones but also fills her own cup, enabling her to continue providing exceptional care to the families she serves.

They cherish their time at their Arizona condo, their vacation home in the Chelan area, and enjoy visiting with their family in Hawaii. The big highlight is spending time with her four children and numerous grandchildren. Some were delivered by Grammy!
